My web design started as a self taught endevor to create my own personal website. From that starting point, I joined forces with Pat Fiaux, a computer science friend in grad school. Good web design is really no different from any other graphic design. It starts with understanding your audiance, controling space, and sparking inspiration. The UI should be created in order of heiarchy. Links should be obvious and interaction simple. You have 5 seconds to keep a viewer on your web page. If it takes that viewer longer than 5 seconds to find what he or she is looking for then there is a good chance he or she will exit and not return. Simple, intuitive, captivating.
